Alternative Way to Output Data in XML format from a SharePoint List Using /_vti_bin/owssvr.dll

In my previous post I explained how to create a DFWP in order to display contents of a SharePoint list in XML structured output. There is a faster way: /_vti_bin/owssvr.dll!

All you need is:

The URL of your server, e.g.: http://yoursharepointserver.com
The List GUID, e.g. 1CABA434-E7A6-443D-90DA-B3E7DEED245F
and create a custum list view (if you need one, otherwise just use the default view: “All Items”)

Lets put it together now: server + /_vti_bin/owssvr.dll + cmd + list + view + output

In my case it looks like that:
http://mysharepointserver.com/_vti_bin/owssvr.dll?Cmd=Display&List={1CABA434-E7A6-443D-90DA-B3E7DEED245F}&View={87486B2B-71D9-4B78-956E-B05B52EB60C0}&XMLDATA=TRUE

If you are dislpaying the default “All Items” View, you can dismiss the View parameter:

How to Create a Custom XML Output using SharePoint Services 3.0

There are just few simple steps:

Create a List
Open SharePoint Designer 2007 and open a blank .aspx page.
Delete all the code generated in .aspx page
In the Task pane open the Data Source Library and click Show Data
Select the Title field and than click Insert Selected Fields as … Multiple Item View
In Change Layout select Plain List of Titles.
Add XML declaration: <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”utf-8″ ?>
Remove all HTML tags
After <WebPartPages:DataFormWebPart runat=”server” add additional property SuppressWebPartChrome=”True” wich will prevent the chrome being displayed. In short: now <table> tags around the web part.
Go to the <xsl:template section and replace the <p> tags with: <xsl:text disable-output-escaping=”yes”><Root></xsl:text> … – this will be the first node of the XML file. You will also need to end this tag.
do the same for all other child nodes you want to display.

If you want to have more universal WebPart so you cold reuse it when saving the site as template you just have to find and replace 2 things:

Find the guid (in my case: {98BDF941-3262-4E4E-8BC7-28D15E66393D}) and replace all it with name of your list (in my case ListToBeXML)
Task 1: {98BDF941-3262-4E4E-8BC7-28D15E66393D} -> ListToBeXML
Find ListID and replaceall it with ListName
Task 2: ListID -> ListName

By searching and replacing we will get:

Read List Items using Sharepoint Web Services and jQuery

These days you can find the samples of this code almost in every corner of the WWW. Here is my contribution. I am also adding new JavaScript function called asmx(). What is does? It gets the URL of the current Site Collection, so you don’t have to write it every time you move your code to different site or server. Just be sure it is in the root folder of your Site Collection or modify the code accordingly.

First do not forget to include the jQuery library!

How to Create a Host Header Site Collection in WSS3 and SharePoint Foundation 2010

For WSS3 and MOSS you will have to open the CMD and use “stsadm” function. Here is the syntax:

1	stsadm -o createsite -url http://yourdomain.com -owneremail user@yourdomain.com -hostheaderwebapplicationurl htt://yourwebapplication.com

You can also give a check at the Microsoft Technet reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262594%28office.12%29.aspx

In SharePoint Foundation 2010 you will have to use PowerShell which comes with Windows Server 2008.

First run:

1	Add-PSSnapin "Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell"

Now lets add a new site collection with host header (be sure to configure the command accodring to your server settings – link):

1	New-SPSite http://www.newdomain.com -OwnerAlias SERVER2008\Administrator -HostHeaderWebApplication http://server2008

Sooner or later you will also like to know which Site Collections there are in you Web Application (link). You can either look for it in Central Administration but you can also run a command in PowerShell:

1	Get-SPWebApplication http://server2008 \| Get-SPSiteAdministration -Limit ALL \| Select URL

Finaly, you do not want to use your Site Collection any more. Lets delete it (link):

1	RemoveSPSite -Identity "http://www.deletethis.com" -GradualDelete

‘Stsadm’ is not Recognized as an Internal or External Command, Operable Program or Batch File.

Add stsadm.exe to default system paths: make your system able to execute stsadm no matter what folder you are in.

Go to Control panel > System > Advanced system setings

Under “System Variables” click Path (You will need to scroll down a bit – see the image attached). Click edit. At the end of the line add:

;C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN

I was at my friend Jose Antonio Morales the other day. He had the same problem. Usualy he was solving this problem by just copying the stsadm.exe file to c:\ and than run all commands from there. But the problem with this approach is that the stsadm.exe in c:\ does not get updated, so he could not use the stsamd -o rename function.

Can not Sign-in to a Site Collection: Login Prompt Asks for Authentication

I created a new SharePoint Site Colletction www.domain.com but I could not sign-in. The most weird was I could sing in from my other machine. Than I figured out there might be an issue on local machine where the Site Collection was residing.

I googled a bit and found the solution quite soon: http://www.sharepointdev.net/sharepoint–setup-upgrade-administration-operation/login-prompt-for-site-collection-1135.shtml

I had to disable the loopbackcheck. Here is how Chris Caravajal is describing it:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Right-click Lsa, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type DisableLoopbackCheck, and then press ENTER.
Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

Unable to open Flash or HTML page in SharePoint Foundation 2010

Yesterday I succesfully set up my first SharePoint Foundation 2010 in Windows Server 2008. Everything went very smoth.

When I tried to play flash movie inside .aspx file i didn’t work. When I tried to open the flash file link directly it was starting to download the swf instead of playing it. I also tried with .html – it was also forcing the download.

I googled a bit and than stumbled upon http://paritala-sasi.blogspot.com/2009/12/opening-html-files-in-sharepoint-2010.html blog.

You need to do following steps:

Open Central Administration
Go to Manage web applications
Select the Web application you want to configure
In the ribbon click on the General Settings button
Under Browser File Handling select Permissive (the explanation there should clarify what is going on)
